Footnote numbering corrected in review of Specimen Days and Collect

Stefan Schoeberlein noted that the footnote reference numbers were discontinuous in our transcription of the review of Specimen Days and Collect in the November 4, 1882, issue of The Literary World (anc.00102). I have redone all of the footnote numbering in this file.

Footnote added to anc.00175 (LG 1855 review)

User Kelly Scott Franklin pointed out a typo in this review, and upon investigation I discovered that the problem was in the original rather than in our transcription. After discussing the long-standing ambiguity in our presentation of <sic> (i.e., that users cannot be sure, in materials for which we present no page images, whether typos are in the original or in our transcription) Ken, Kevin and I decided we should include a footnote. This accords with the protocol that we follow for journalism transcriptions. I have now added the note for the review that (re-)raised this issue.

Corrected attribution of 1860 Leaves review

On a tip from Eric Conrad, Ken determined that we had no reason to believe that Whitman was the author of the unsigned review from 9 June 1860 in the New York Day Book. I have made the change to the transcription and the index.

Attribution of review corrected

After consulting with Ken and Nikki, we have decided that there is no reason to believe that Whitman authored the unsigned review of the Rossetti volume Poems by Walt Whitman that appeared in the November 1869 issue of The Australian Journal. I have therefore changed the authorship attribution to "unknown."

Newly discovered review published

We have published a newly discovered review of Whitman's poem "After All, Not to Create Only." The review appeared in the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin on November 11, 1871. Whitman had first published the poem concurrently in the New York Commercial Advertiser and the New York Evening Post on September 7, 1871; the poem was then published in a stand-alone volume by Roberts Brothers in Boston in late 1871. It is this bound volume that is being reviewed by the Bulletin.

Contemporary Reviews Section Updated

I have updated the Contemporary Reviews section of the Whitman
Archive. All reviews are new encoded in TEI P5, and I have enriched
their metadata to reflect the transcription and encoding histories of
individual files, source information, and rights. In addition,
material in the Reviews section now reflects the Whitman Archive's
evolving approach in metadata display, as well as information on how
to a cite an individual review and a link to the underlying XML/TEI of
each review.

In a subsequent stage of revision, the index pages providing access to
reviews of specific volumes and poems (e.g.,
http://whitmanarchive.org/criticism/reviews/leaves1855/index.html,
http://whitmanarchive.org/criticism/reviews/a_child/index.html) will
be updated. For a short period of time, bibliographic information on
the index pages may differ slightly from information displayed with
each individual review. Information displayed with each review is the
most complete and correct information.

Encoding of review of Leaves of Grass (1871-72) tweaked

An anonymous June 1872 review of the 1871-72 Leaves of Grass was not displaying because of an attribute error.  I removed the rend attribute that was causing the trouble and adjusted the encoding for the section numbers in the poem excerpts.

Footnote updated in November Boughs review

A November 1888 review of November Boughs published in the Boston Evening Transcript included a footnote about Elias Hicks that should have been about Edmund Clarence Stedman.  I have corrected the reference and updated the footnote.

change of authorship attribution: review of "A Child's Reminiscence," Cincinnati Daily Commercial (28 Dec. 1859)

Based on conversations with Virginia Jackson and on my own research, I have changed the attribution from "[Anonymous]" to "[Henry Clapp and Walt Whitman]." Whitman knew Murat Halstead, a long-time editor at the Cincinnati Daily Commercial, and even as late as 1876 Whitman wrote a letter to Halstead marked "Private" designed to place extracts from Memoranda During the War in the Commercial prior to the publication of the book. Several reasons, then, contribute to the attribution of the review to Clapp and Whitman: 1) this personal connection between Halstead and Whitman, 2) the speed with which the review appeared in Cincinnati (December 28, 1859) following initial publication in The New-York Saturday Press only a few days earlier (December 24, 1859), and 3) the known history of elaborate publicity campaigns orchestrated by Clapp and Whitman.

Missing text added to review of Leaves of Grass Imprints

I have filled in some gaps in the text of a LoG Imprints review (http://whitmanarchive.org/criticism/reviews/leaves_imprints1860/anc.00274.html) based on Ken's reading of the original copy during his recent trip to Brooklyn.
