Minor corrections made in two encyclopedia entries and one manuscript transcription

Stefan Schöberlein pointed out that the entry for the New Orleans Crescent (https://whitmanarchive.org/criticism/current/encyclopedia/entry_36.html) was missing a space between words and had perpetuated from the print edition a misspelling of the last name of Durant DaPonte as "Da Poute." Our transcription of med.00725, which was based on the works of Grier and Holloway, included this same misspelling. Finally, the entry for New Orleans, Louisiana had referred to "Fremont House" instead of the correct "Tremont House." I have now corrected each of these errors.

EAD finding aids updated

The Variorum 1855 Leaves of Grass project led to many changes to our TEI metadata for the early manuscripts, and I have updated the date, work, and scope content notes for those manuscripts in EAD files to accord with the information in the TEI files. This affects both the individual repositories' finding aids and the integrated catalog of manuscripts.

Image links in Yale manuscript catalog correted

Dr. Jay Grossman pointed out that a number of image links were broken in the catalog of Whitman manuscripts held at Yale University's Beinecke Library. The links in question were for items yal.00338, yal.00454, and yal.00455. The links have been fixed. We thank Prof. Grossman for pointing out the error.

Manuscript note update

I have updated the editorial note associated with the manuscript "Breathjuice" to reflect the manuscript's likely connection to the 1856 poem "Bunch Poem" (later titled "Spontaneous Me").

Corrected title of manuscript collection at the University at Buffalo

The Manuscript Catalogs index page incorrectly described the collection holding Whitman manuscripts at the University at Buffalo as "The Poetry Collection." The manuscripts are in fact held in the Rare & Special Books Collection. The index has been corrected to reflect this.

EAD entries for items from the University at Buffalo added

We have written EAD catalog entries for the two prose manuscripts held in the Rare & Special Books Collection in the University Libraries at the University at Buffalo. As with our other EAD entires, the electronic catalog records contain metadata about the manuscripts, images of them, as well as brief descriptions of the manuscripts' contents. The records can be found either in the individual catalog for the University at Buffalo or in the Integrated Guide to Walt Whitman Literary Manuscripts.

Publication of early notebooks, prose manuscripts

I have published new index pages for the notebooks and manuscripts sections of the Whitman Archive.  The new pages are searchable and sortable and offer access to thirteen early notebooks and 118 prose manuscripts, as well as updated versions of the poetry manuscripts and Civil War notebooks previously available on the Whitman Archive.  Thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities for support of this work, which was completed as part of the project "Walt Whitman as an Author before Leaves of Grass."  This work was a team effort, with important contributions from Brett Barney, Stephanie Blalock, Janel Cayer, Jonathan Cheng, Kirsten Clawson, Eric Conrad, Karin Dalziel, Sara Duke, Jessica Dussault, Ed Folsom, Nikki Gray, Kirby Little, Liz Lorang, Kevin McMullen, Natalie O'Neal, Ken Price, Stefan Schöberlein, and Jeannette Schollaert.

"To limn the stately and the" manuscript revised

Tim Jackson drew our attention to the fact that the second part of the first line was not showing up, a problem that turned out to be caused by the misplacement of a note tag in the transcription. This has now been corrected and the previously omitted text is now displayed.

"Had I the Choice" manuscript line segment restored

Tim Jackson pointed out that our rendering of this manuscript (yal.00040) omitted the end of the line that begins "Homer with all his wars and loftiest." Though these words were present in the source XML, they weren't being displayed because of an odd sequence of elements within the line. I have adjusted that sequence, and the full line now appears correctly.

Information about loc.00052 ("sorrow") corrected

Both the TEI transcription of and EAD record for this manuscript were missing links to some of the page images. I've added those and corrected the information in the tracking database.
