Publication of early notebooks, prose manuscripts

I have published new index pages for the notebooks and manuscripts sections of the Whitman Archive.  The new pages are searchable and sortable and offer access to thirteen early notebooks and 118 prose manuscripts, as well as updated versions of the poetry manuscripts and Civil War notebooks previously available on the Whitman Archive.  Thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities for support of this work, which was completed as part of the project "Walt Whitman as an Author before Leaves of Grass."  This work was a team effort, with important contributions from Brett Barney, Stephanie Blalock, Janel Cayer, Jonathan Cheng, Kirsten Clawson, Eric Conrad, Karin Dalziel, Sara Duke, Jessica Dussault, Ed Folsom, Nikki Gray, Kirby Little, Liz Lorang, Kevin McMullen, Natalie O'Neal, Ken Price, Stefan Schöberlein, and Jeannette Schollaert.

Update to "schoolmaster" notebook

I have updated the editorial note accompanying the Whitman Archive's transcription of Whitman's "a schoolmaster" notebook to reflect Zachary Turpin's recent discovery of Whitman's 1852 novel, Life and Adventures of Jack Engle, the plot of which is drafted in this notebook.

Updated notes and work relations information for notebooks

I updated the editorial notes for three notebooks: "med Cophósis" (loc.00005), "a schoolmaster" (loc.04588), and "Talbot Wilson" (loc.00141). These updates clarified why we classified the item as a notebook, in the case of "med Cophósis;" the relationship of the notebook to a published piece of fiction, in the case of "a schoolmaster;" and the dating of the notebook, in the case of "Talbot Wilson."  I also revised work relations information in the XML files for three notebooks (adding more specific indications of which lines connect to published lines of poetry and prose): "In his presence" (loc.00483), "The regular old followers" (loc.00024), and "Talbot Wilson" (loc.00141).

"Memorials" (Notebook #84) added to Harned EAD

I have created an entry for loc.05589, which is one of the lost notebooks, but which is represented in the collection by photocopies of microfilm.

Five of Whitman's early notebooks added to the Whitman Archive

Earlier today Nikki Gray published five of Whitman's early notebooks as part of our work on the NEH-funded project "Walt Whitman as an Author before Leaves of Grass."
