Corrections to 1855 Leaves of Grass

I have made a series of corrections to the punctuation, spacing, and capitalization of the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass. These changes include:

• Capitalized title text on title page
• Removed extraneous comma from copyright statement
• Changed period to comma at the end of “The suicide sprawls on the bloody floor of the bedroom,” (p. 17)
• Removed space from “near by” at the top of p. 19
• Added comma to end of “The western turkey-shooting draws old and young . . . . some lean on their rifles,” (p. 22)
• Adjusted (mis)spelling of “adobe” to “abode” to match image on p. 23
• Changed period to comma at the end of “Breast that presses against other breasts it shall be you,” (p. 30)
• Adjusted the location of the line break in line that begins “Hands I have taken” (p. 30)
• Adjusted the location of the line break in line that begins “I hear the bravuras of birds” (p. 31)
• Removed extraneous comma in line “But I know it is sure and alive and sufficient” (p. 49)
• Adjusted (mis)spelling of “and” to “aud” to match image on p. 58
• Adjusted the location of the line break in line that begins “The old forever new things” (p. 61)
• Adjusted the location of the line break in line that begins “The designs for wallpapers” (p. 63)
• Added missing line break to the line that begins “And liquor is spilled on lips” (p. 72)
• Added missing line break to the line that begins “It is dark here underground” (p. 72)
• Changed semi-colon to colon at the end of the line beginning “I love the rich running day” (p. 77)
• Adjusted the location of the line break in line that begins “He was a frequent gunner and fisher” (p. 79)
• Changed period to exclamation point in line that begins “Those are really men!” (p. 83)
• Changed comma to period at the end of the line that begins “They shall get a grant” (p. 89)

Correction in periodical printing of "Bardic Symbols"

I have supplied a space that Tim Jackson pointed out was missing in section 16 ("you,or").

Corrections in LG 1891-92

Tim Jackson pointed out that on p. 436 of our transcription of "A Backward Glance o'er Traveled Roads" a closing parenthesis had been substituted for a comma after the word "confession." This has been fixed. I also added a horizontal bar to separate the footnote from the body of the text on the same page.

Correction to "Song of the Universal" in 1881 Leaves

Ken noticed that the section number headings did not appear in our transcription of this poem. I've added them.

Both the TEI transcription of and EAD record for this manuscript were missing links to some of the page images. I've added those and corrected the information in the tracking database.

Typo Correction in Sequel to Drum-Taps

Mary Young pointed out a transcription error in the Drum-Taps and Sequel to Drum-Taps volume. In "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" I've corrected the phrase "And carried hither and you" to "And carried hither and yon."

Corrections made to Drum-Taps

I've made several changes to the volume of Drum-Taps available on the Whitman Archive:

In the transcription of page 31, I have restored the word "river" to the line that begins "Enter the captur'd works"; page 32, restored the dropped line, "An attendant follows, holding a tray--he carries a refuse pail"; page 33 restored the dropped line, "The neck of the cavalry-man, with the bullet through and through, I examine"; page 49, restored the exclamation point after "victorious" in the line beginning, "Sons of the Mother of All!"

Similarly, to the volume of Drum-Taps with Sequel to Drum-Taps, I have restored the word "river" to the line that begins "Enter the captur'd works" and the exclamation point after "victorious" in the line beginning, "Sons of the Mother of All!"

Steve Marsden brought these transcription errors to our attention.

dropped line restored in 1871-72 Leaves of Grass

Matt Cohen pointed out that the line "The people to become brothers and sisters," was dropped in our transcription of "Passage to India" in the 1871-72 Leaves of Grass. Thanks go to Joshua Ware for correcting this error.

An Archive user pointed out an error in our transcription of the 1871-72 Leaves of Grass. The line that begins, "To think that the rivers will flow, and the snow fall" had been transcribed as "To thank that the rivers will flow . . . ." I've revised our transcription.

I have corrected Fred McReady's name on the correspondence index page, where it was listed as "Fred Mcready." (McReady's name was transcribed correctly in the letter's TEI file.)

Error in Civil War letter corrected

I corrected the name of Thomas P. Sawyer, who corresponded with Whitman during the Civil War, in one of the letters and the index page for the correspondence. It had been encoded as "Thomas P. Singer," and Liz pointed out the error.

"After the argument"--tweaking of a poetry manuscript

I noticed we lacked a space between "rippling" and "water" in our transcription. Thanks go to Brett for fixing this yesterday.

mistranscription in "The Wound-Dresser," Leaves of Grass (1881-82) fixed

In the 1881-82 edition of Leaves of Grass, we had mistranscribed an instance of the word soldiers' as soldier's in "The Wound-Dresser." I have fixed this error, which was pointed out by an Archive user.

typo in "Beat! Beat! Drums!" corrected

A Whitman Archive user directed our attention to a typo in our transcription of the periodical printing of "Beat! Beat! Drums!" In the first stanza, "congregation" had been mistranscribed as "congregagation." I've fixed the error.

Slight change made to biographical essay

I have altered the first sentence of Ed and Ken's biographical essay on Whitman by shortening the information on his birthplace to "in West Hills on Long Island." A user of the Archive from New York helpfully pointed out that the previous phrasing was incorrect, since West Hills is near Huntington, Long Island, rather than Hempstead.
