Published transcription of Whitman's periodical poem "The House of Friends"

A transcription of Whitman's 1850 poem "The House of Friends" has been added to the Archive's "Poems First Published in Periodicals" section. The poem had been listed as having first appeared in a periodical, but the Archive had been unable to obtain an image of the issue of the New York Daily Tribune in which it appeared, thus no image or transcription was available. We have now obtained a digital image of a microfilm copy of the issue, allowing us to transcribe and annotate the poem. A link to the transcription has also been added to the index of individual periodical poems, as well as the index that appears on the page dedicated to the New York Daily Tribune.

Date Correction for Periodical Publication of "The Mississippi at Midnight"

Matt Cohen noticed a discrepancy between the dates shown in the "Date" and "Publication Information" fields of the HTML display at http://whitmanarchive.org/published/periodical/poems/per.00063. I have corrected the TEI metadata so that both show the correct date (March 6, 1848).

New York Aurora page images now available on Whitman Archive

As of this morning, page images of the New York Aurora from February through April 1842 are available on the Archive. To accommodate this material, I've created a new index page for Whitman's contributions to periodicals. The "periodicals" link from the home page now goes to this new page, which provides access both to Whitman's poems first published in periodicals and to the Aurora.

The transcription of "Beat! Beat! Drums!" duplicated the word "his" in line five. I've fixed this error in the WWA transcription. In addition, I've updated the bibliographic information for the Genoways volume referenced in the publication history section. Genoways' work was listed as "forthcoming," which I've changed to "2010."

A Whitman Archive user directed our attention to a typo in our transcription of the periodical printing of "Beat! Beat! Drums!" In the first stanza, "congregation" had been mistranscribed as "congregagation." I've fixed the error.
