Introduction to Louisa Van Velsor Whitman Letters Corrected

 Wesley Raabe's introductory essay, "'walter dear': The Letters from Louisa Van Velsor Whitman to Her Son Walt" (anc.02046) contained a small typo and many broken links, which I have now corrected.

Corrected date for an amanuensis letter

Jacqueline Budell noted that "Nelson Jabo to Adeline Jabo, 21 January 1865" (nar.03612) was misdated on the index page and in the title as being from June 1865. These errors are now corrected.

Correction to note in "Walt Whitman to John M. Binckley, 24 March 1868"

Ken noticed that the word "letter" was missing from the "Correspondent" note for this letter (loc.01577). It is now supplied.

Date metadata corrected in letter of 29 October 1873

Ken noticed that the letter from Whitman to Charles W. Eldridge of 29 October 1873 was appearing out of chronological order on the index page. I have corrected the date value in the TEI header and reindexed the correspondence.  The letter now appears in its proper position in the chronological sort.

Footnote added to letter of 11 May 1863

Archive user Walter Stahr contacted us with information about his ancestor, Thomas Cotrel, who is mentioned in a letter from Whitman to Moses Lane dated 11 May 1863. I have added this information in a footnote.

Additional Letters from Old Age Period Published

We have published 280 additional letters from 1888 and 1889, the first two years of the Old Age period (1888-1892).

Four new letters added; staff page updated

We have published four new letters—one from the Reconstruction era and three from the Post-Reconstruction era. We had had transcriptions of these letters for some time, but were awaiting images so that they could be proofed against them. We have now received the images and proofed the letters.

We also discovered that several people had been left off the list of past staff members on the Whitman Archive staff page. The missing staffers have now been added to the list. Kevin McMullen's bio was also updated.

Updated repository name for letter

The location of the letter from Walt Whitman to John Hay dated March 10, 1887, was listed as unknown.  The letter is held at the John Hay Library, Brown University.  I have updated the metadata for the letter accordingly.

Updated images for a Civil War letter

The wrong images were displaying for the letter from Lizzie H. Smith to Walt Whitman of September 17, 1864.  I’ve updated the letter so that the correct images are now displaying.

Correction to correspondence note

I have corrected the second footnote associated with a letter from Walt Whitman to Louisa Orr Whitman, 11 October [1879].  The link in the footnote previously pointed to the wrong letter, and the information about Hannah Heyde misrepresented her letter to her brother.

We have revised letter from Silas S. Soule to Walt Whitman, 8 January 1862,  by correcting a typo in the correspondent note. We have also added images and updated the transcription to match the images.

Correction to letter from Palin H. Sims to Walt Whitman, 17 March 1885

User Sue Ramsey, an expert on this family, notified us that the name of Palin's brother, "Sam," had been mistranscribed as "Lane" (and that our gloss about the possible indentity of Lane was also therefore unnecessary). I have corrected the transcription and altered the notes accordingly.

Updated annotations for 1881 letter

I updated the annotations for an October 31, 1881 letter from Whitman to Sylvester Baxter to reflect the findings in a recent article published in the Walt Whitman Quarterly Review.

Corrections made to piece of correspondence

Ken noticed several errors in the notes for the letter from Walt Whitman to James Redpath, 21 October 1863. The name of the character in Louisa May Alcott's Hospital Sketches, Tribulation Periwinkle, was misspelled. Also, the note incorrectly referred to Specimen Days as the realization of Whitman's publishing proposal to Redpath, when it should have been Memoranda During the War. Both of these errors have been corrected.

Updated post-Reconstruction total letter count

I have updated the status bar on the “post-Reconstruction” correspondence page to be consistent with our most recent estimate of the total number of post-Reconstruction letters (changing the estimated total from 1900 to 1800 letters).

Identified probable Burroughs note on correspondence

After review and comparison with other letters, we have identified John Burroughs as the probable writer of a note (a quote by Hartley Coleridge) on an envelope that accompanied the letter from Walt Whitman to John Burroughs of February 9, 1883.  We had previously listed the writer of this note as unknown. We have updated the information in a footnote:
