A new section of the Archive devoted to Whitman's marginalia and annotations is now available. This section features more than 800 searchable pages of Whitman’s markings on books and notes about his reading. Whitman Archive staff and former staff members and affiliates who have contributed to the marginalia and annotations include: Matt Cohen, Kenneth Price, Ed Folsom, Erica Fretwell, Ashley Lawson, Brett Barney, Liz Lorang, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Jonathan Cheng, Travis Brown, Mike Speriosu, Laura Beerits, Elizabeth Frye, Nicole Gray, Lauren Grewe, Ty Alyea, Alejandro Omidsalar, and Ashley Palmer. Thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities for support of this work.
Scholars have long relied on print-based resources that are stable, or that remain more or less constant over time. The Whitman Archive, by contrast, changes frequently as new content is added and as errors are located and corrected. This record of additions and changes to the content to the Archive responds to the challenge of creating a digital resource that can serve as a scholarly reference. It represents an effort to be transparent about our methods and history and to render visible changes that would be otherwise largely invisible. We do not record minor changes to the appearance of the site or temporary server outages.
