Corrected placement of closing hi tag in Burroughs's Notes on Walt Whitman

Ken noticed that a stretch of text was erroneously being displayed in a small font. I have corrected the problem by closing the tag that creates smallcaps earlier, so that only the title Leaves of Grass is affected.

Corrected typo in piece of correspondence

James alerted us to an error in the letter from Whitman to his mother of March 29, 1864. A number had been incorrectly transcribed as "6000" when it should have been "600" and a closing parenthesis was missing. I have corrected the mistake.

Signatures (with affiliations) removed from the end of biography

I have removed Ed's and Ken's signatures from the bottom of the text of the biography. The impetus was a long-standing problem: Ken's affiliation was given as "College of William and Mary." In the years since this problem was noted, however, the need for the signature at the bottom has been obviated by the addition of the authors' names to the top of the page, so rather than update the affiliation I have removed the signature block from the end.

Hyphenated publication dates added to index page for "Other Books"

I have corrected the publication dates for Drum-Taps and Sequel to Drum-Taps and Memoranda During the War listed on the index page of the "Other Books" subsection of "Published Works" so as to conform to our decision to use the dates given in the front matter, with both years fully spelled out.

Eight file names changed to resolve duplication across Archive

In comparing all of the XML files across the different subsections of the Archive, I discovered that eight file names had apparently been accidentally assigned to two different objects, both of which were present in one of the Archive directories but only one of which had been recorded in the tracking database. In most cases I have therefore renamed one of each pair of files, recorded new file names in the database, and corrected links to each of the files. In the case of biography/correspondence/tei/nyp.00250.xml, I discovered that the file was a duplicate of the file in manuscripts/tei/nyp.00250.xml, so I deleted the one in correspondence, as the item is not a piece of correspondence. These are the other specific changes: biography/correspondence/tei/loc.00151.xml was renamed loc.04348; biography/correspondence/tei/anc.00171.xml was renamed anc.00118.xml; criticism/interviews/tei/med.00851.xml was renamed med.00015.xml; criticism/interviews/tei/med.00546.xml was renamed med.00016.xml; criticism/reviews/tei/anc.00273 was renamed anc.00146.xml; published/foreign/tei/med.00401.xml was renamed med.00017.xml; about/tei/anc.00140.xml was renamed anc.00145.xml.

Corrections to finding aids

Ed Folsom noticed that two of the items listed under "Death's Valley" in the Integrated Catalog of Walt Whitman's Literary Manuscripts (uva.00133 and loc.00321) were unrelated to that poem. I have corrected the work associations in the University of Virginia and Feinberg finding aids and regenerated the Integrated Catalog.

New links added to WWA homepage

We have added a "More.." link to the Whitman Archive homepage, underneath the "In Whitman's Hand" section. This was done to reflect the fact that the Marginalia and Annotations material is not linked directly from the homepage, and to indicate to users that there are additional materials "In Whitman's Hand" that are not linked directly.

We have also added a link to "Interviews" under the "Commentary" section.

New EAD record added for NYHS manuscript

We have added an EAD record for a Whitman prose manuscript held at the New-York Historical Society Library (NYHS). This is our first EAD record for an item at the NYHS, so we have created a new manuscript catalog for that repository. An EAD entry for the manuscript has also been added to the Integrated Catalog of Literary Manuscripts.

Several small corrections to Leaves of Grass 1891-1892

The LG stylesheet didn't have any code to handle italicized sub-heads, so they were being rendered in roman type. I added a few lines to cater for this situation. In the transcription itself, I also made several miscellaneous corrections: added italicization of subhead of "An Old Man's Thought of School" and smallcaps in the first word of "An Ended Day"; removed erroneous italicization in the title of "Mirages."

Updated finding aids, including Integrated Catalog

I have made a large number of corrections to the EAD records. Many of these corrections were to the connection between an item and a work. Others were to the descriptions of individual items. One result should be that far fewer items in the Integrated Catalog are grouped under the wrong work title.

"Manly Health and Training" and Additional Editorials Published

Whitman's 1858 newspaper series "Manly Health and Training" has just been published, with an introduction and annotations by Zachary Turpin (University of Idaho). We have also published 20 new editorials likely written by Whitman for the New York Aurora. Additionally, we have written editorial notes for each piece of journalism, explaining the Archive's rationale for attributing the piece to Whitman in the absence of an explicit "Walt Whitman" byline.

The journalism index page has been updated to reflex this new additions.

Four new letters added; staff page updated

We have published four new letters—one from the Reconstruction era and three from the Post-Reconstruction era. We had had transcriptions of these letters for some time, but were awaiting images so that they could be proofed against them. We have now received the images and proofed the letters.

We also discovered that several people had been left off the list of past staff members on the Whitman Archive staff page. The missing staffers have now been added to the list. Kevin McMullen's bio was also updated.

Added National Archives to list of public domain repositories for images

A couple of the images in the gallery are from the National Archives, and one can reproduce them without seeking permissions, so I've added that information to the list of similar repositories (viz., Library of Congress, Gay Wilson Allen Collection, and Ed Folsom Collection) in the FAQ.

Attribution of review corrected

After consulting with Ken and Nikki, we have decided that there is no reason to believe that Whitman authored the unsigned review of the Rossetti volume Poems by Walt Whitman that appeared in the November 1869 issue of The Australian Journal. I have therefore changed the authorship attribution to "unknown."
